The Ocean is the great repressed of contemporary Humanity.
The immense soul in which we make the evils of the mainland flow, hoping that they will disappear in our eyes sinking into the abysses.
The sick unconscious whose crucial importance we do not want to understand in the balance of the planet.
Starting from these reflections Enrico Ascoli began a research on myths, legends, tales and facts related to the sea.
The fascination of these readings gives rise to the six tracks of
Mother of the Deep.
The diaries of Knud Rasmussen, who spent a long time at the beginning of the 20th century among the Eskimo populations, have left a particular mark on the author's imagination.
The titles of the second track and the album in fact derive from one of the main deities of the Arctic populations which, according to the regions, has different names (Sedna, Sanna, Inuktitut etc.).
It is also simply referred to as "the far and below". From the depths of the abyss it regulates life on the surface.
It is a kind of matriarchal Poseidon.
It lives surrounded by a vortex of cetaceans, walruses and seals.
His anger is manifested by storms and food shortages.
It has a deep grudge against men who do not follow the rules of nature; she is irritated by their vanity and vainglory.
The Eskimo rituals to ingratiate her provide that the shaman descends with his spirit into the depths of the depths and after having combed and braided her long black hair he can forward the requests of his people.
Other inspirations comes from the chronicle of the progressive breaking of immense portions of the Antarctic ice due to climate warming (Larsen C) or from the fascination for the formation of a volcanic island from nothing and the progressive birth of life on it
(Life Form on Surtsey).
Most of the sounds on the album were created in an attempt not to literally imitate the song of the cetaceans.
For this purpose the author used various objects resonated by rubbing or blowing through them. He then added research into synthesis timbres that blended well with this strong sampling base.
This material was then structured in the passages according to repetitive logics, derived from natural random motions, giving life to
"Sound Landscapes" similar to the movement of the sea surface.

l'Oceano é il grande rimosso dell'umanità contemporanea.
L'immensa anima in cui facciamo defluire i mali della terraferma sperando che spariscano ai nostri occhi sprofondando negli abissi.
L'inconscio malato di cui non vogliamo intenderne l'importanza cruciale nell'equilibrio del pianeta.
Partendo da queste riflessioni Enrico Ascoli ha iniziato una ricerca su miti, leggende, racconti e fatti legati al mare.
Dalla fascinazione di queste letture nascono le sei tracce di
Mother of the Deep.
I diari di Knud Rasmussen, che passo' lungo tempo ad inizio del 900 tra le popolazioni eschimesi, hanno lasciato un'impronta particolare nell'immaginario dell'autore.
I titoli della seconda traccia e dell'album traggono infatti origine da una delle principali divinità delle popolazioni artiche che, a seconda delle regioni, ha differenti nomi (Sedna, Sanna, Inuktitut etc.).
Viene anche semplicemente nominata come “quella lontana e in basso”. Dal profondo degli abissi regola la vita in superficie.
E' una sorta di Poseidone matriarcale.
Vive circondata da un vortice di cetacei, trichechi e foche.
La sua rabbia si manifesta con le tempeste e con la carestia di cibo.
Essa ha un profondo rancore nei confronti degli uomini che non seguono le regole della natura; é irritata dalla loro vanità e vanagloria.
I rituali Eschimesi per ingraziarsela prevedono che lo sciamano discenda con il suo spirito nel profondo degli abissi e dopo averle pettinato e intrecciato i lunghi capelli neri può inoltrare le richieste del suo popolo.
Altre ispirazioni sono arrivate dalla cronaca della progressiva rottura di immense porzioni del ghiaccio antartico a causa del riscaldamento climatico (Larsen C) o dalla fascinazione per la formazione dal nulla di un isola vulcanica e dal progressivo nascere della vita su di essa
(Life Form on Surtsey).
La maggior parte dei suoni dell'album sono stati creati nel tentativo di imitare, non in senso letterale, il canto dei cetacei.
A questo scopo l'autore ha usato vari oggetti messi in risonanza per sfregamento o soffiandoci attraverso. Ha poi aggiunto una ricerca su timbriche di sintesi che si amalgamassero bene a questa forte base di campionamento.
Tale materiale é stato poi strutturato nei brani secondo logiche ripetitive, derivate da moti aleatori naturali, dando vita a
"Paesaggi Sonori" simili al movimento della superficie marina.
